About The 1979 Program

The Fifth World Fantasy Convention, run by NECON Founder Bob Booth, took place at the Providence, RI Convention Center on Friday, October 12-14, 1979. The Guest of Honors included a popular young writer by the name of Stephen King, a brilliant new illustrator by the name of Michael Whelan, and the famous Frank Belknap Long, best known for his contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos genre.

Steve King had early success with his Doubleday novels “Night Shift” and “The Stand”, young artist Michael was promoting his first collection “Wonderworks”, and Frank was easily the most famous of the lot for his World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (won at the previous World Fantasy Convention in 1978), and his eventual Bram Stoker Award in 1987. His writing style covered horror fiction, fantasy and science fiction, poetry, gothic romance, comic books and non-fiction.

The Master of Ceremony for this year was World Fantasy and Nebula Award winner Charles L. Grant.

This 44 page booklet contains original art by Michael Whelan, J.K. Potter, Ned Dameron, and many more. Stories of King, Long and Whelan were written by their peers Charles L. Grant, Joseph Payne Brennan and Don Maitz respectively. The booklet makes for great reading and is a perfect accompaniment to your horror writing and art collection.

Excellent book at a good price!

I'm relatively new to the world of collecting first editions, special editions, etc. of my favorite books and authors so the ability to add an early 1st edition Dark Tower novel in hardcover---still in the shrinkwrap!--at this price was very nice. I've rarely seen the first 3 DT novels in HC anywhere I've shopped so I was particularly glad to add this one to my collection. I also really enjoyed the inclusion of the 1979 World Fantasy program, the King essay by Grant is a nice read.
